About this project

As garbage in landfills continues to grow and climate change becomes an extremely pressing issue, AIs that help aid in protecting our planet are crucial.

The team trained the AI through image classification to detect what the trash is-- a bottle, a piece of styrofoam, flimsy plastic, food waste, etc. and what bin it was meant to be in. The Smart Waste Sorter contains a motion sensor, triggering the camera to take a photo when a person throws trash. The photo is sent to the AI and the correct bin is identified (compost, recycling, or regular trash). The device beeps when a person uses an incorrect bin.

This project will help keep our environment cleaner and help people become familiar with the act of recycling.
