AIClub Student Research Symposiums

THE FUTURE OF AI

Each year, we hold research symposiums for AIClub students to showcase their brilliant AI-based innovations. These symposiums display the talent and effort of K-12 students, and the incredible things they are able to create through the right guidance and resources. 

Our symposiums start with recognized keynote speakers who discuss an interesting field where AI is used, followed by the students launching into their project presentations that explore a variety of areas and industries. We finish off our symposiums with a session by Dr.Nisha Talagala, our co-founder and CEO, who provides valuable advice for students interested in higher education or research possibilities in AI.

AIClub Research Symposium showcases innovative AI research projects done by students grades 6-12. These projects touch a variety of areas and fields; space, healthcare, social good, climate change, the fine arts and much more. Our Keynote Speaker this year is Ashish Bansal, who leads the core ML infrastructure at Google and is the author of Advanced Natural Language Processing with TensorFlow.

On June 25th, AIClub held its 2022 Student Research Symposium, where 9 K-12 students, parents, teachers, and industry computer scientists gathered to see students present research innovations using AI and answer prevalent challenges in the modern world today.

Dr.Nikunj Oza 

Nikunj Oza is the leader of the Data Sciences Group at NASA Ames Research Center. He also leads a NASA project team that researches and applies machine learning to aviation
safety and operations. Dr. Oza’s 50+ research papers represent his research interests, which include data mining, machine learning, ensemble learning, anomaly detection, and their applications to Aeronautics and Earth Science. He received the Arch T. Colwell Award for co-authoring one of the five most innovative technical papers selected from 3300+ SAE technical papers in 2005. His data mining team received the 2018 and 2019 NASA Honor Awards and the 2010 NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate Associate Administrators Award. In 2019, he was named by Cognilytica as one of 50 key
people in the US government working to move the adoption of AI forward across the industry. He is an Associate Editor for the peer-reviewed journal Information Fusion (Elsevier) and has served as organizer, senior program committee member, and program committee member of many data mining and machine learning conferences. He received his B.S. in Mathematics with Computer Science from MIT in 1994, and M.S. (in 1998) and Ph.D. (in 2001) in Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.

Open Sourcing Medicine Discovery with DeepChem
Dr. Bharath Ramsundar 

Bharath Ramsundar, PhD is the founder and CEO of Deep Forest Sciences, a start-up working to accelerate the use of AI in deep tech. Dr. Ramsundar is also the lead maintainer of the DeepChem project, an open source consortium working to build software for open source medicine discovery. Bharath previously co-founded Computable, a venture-backed start-up building better tools for collaborative dataset management. Dr. Ramsundar has a Computer Science Ph.D. from Stanford University. His research and professional interests include the application of deep learning in drug discovery. Bharath is the lead author of “TensorFlow for Deep Learning :From Linear Regression to Reinforcement Learning”, a developer’s introduction to modern machine learning, with O’Reilly Media, and the lead author of “Deep Learning for the Life Sciences”.
