The Challenge:
Preparing Youth for an AI-Driven World

Artificial Intelligence is reshaping industries, societies, and the future of work. In its guidance for policymakers, UNESCO emphasizes that empowering students with AI knowledge and skills—early and inclusively—is critical for building a fair, equitable, and innovative global society. By introducing learners to AI concepts, ethics, and practical applications, countries can leapfrog traditional development barriers and prepare the next generation to be creators, not just consumers, of tomorrow’s technology. This program aligns directly with that crucial global mission.

The AI Club Pilot – Learning by Doing

We launched an ambitious 12-week pilot program designed to make AI accessible, engaging, and impactful for Grades 6-8 students:

 

Nationwide Reach

Successfully implemented in 100 diverse schools, proving the model works everywhere, from urban centers to rural villages.

 

Hands-On Learning

Students dove into AI Concepts, explored real-world Context, built practical Capabilities, and unleashed their Creativity.

 

Accessible Tech:

Utilized cloud platforms and offline activities, overcoming infrastructure barriers.

Data-Backed Success:

Real-time monitoring tracked engagement and outcomes, ensuring quality and scalability.

The 4C Training Philosophy

         To make AI accessible and engaging, the pilot adopted a 4C approach:

  • Concepts – “What is AI?” “How do algorithms learn?”

  • Context – Examining real-world AI examples, from self-driving cars to smart agriculture.

  • Capabilities – Building image and language-processing models on a cloud-based platform.

  • Creativity – Designing final AI projects that address local or global issues, allowing students to innovate in meaningful ways.

  • 341 Unique Datasets: Demonstrated resourcefulness and a keen eye for data's power.

  • UNESCO Alignment: Met global standards for AI competency, fostering technical skills and critical, ethical thinking.

UNESCO Recognition and Alignment

In line with UNESCO’s AI Competencies for School Students, Sri Lanka’s AI Club program focuses on the following pillars:

  • Understanding AI Concepts: Students learn how AI systems function, from data gathering to model training and iteration.

  • Using AI Tools Responsibly: Practical hands-on sessions with image and text AI models, supported by a strong emphasis on ethical, fair, and responsible AI use.

  • Creating AI Solutions: Learners design and build custom projects—problem-solving local issues using AI-powered insights.

  • Ethical & Social Impact: Discussions and modules on bias, fairness, and the wider societal effects of deploying AI in healthcare, agriculture, and services.

  • Critical Thinking: Students ask probing questions, identify data gaps, and iterate on their solutions, building resilience and innovation skills.
