10 Top STEM & Entrepreneurship Competitions for High School and Middle School (Yes Our Students Have Wins In All Of Them)

Following our 400 wins announcement, we wanted to go deeper — not on the wins, but on the competitions themselves. What do you actually submit? What gets judged? What skill does each one really reward? There are many competitions. These are the top 10 that students can enter to demonstrate national and international recognition of their work.



1. Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS)


What you submit: A full independent research report, up to 20 pages, written to resemble a real peer-reviewed journal article, with title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion. Alongside it: essays on why you chose your research question, what challenges you overcame, and evidence of leadership; an ethics statement confirming the work is original and not AI-generated; and formal recommendations from both a teacher and your research mentor, written in a question-answer format specific to the competition.


What areas it covers: Any STEM field — biomedical science, computer science, environmental research, physics, mathematics, and more. Roughly 2,600 students enter each year; 300 become Scholars, and a final 40 become Finalists who travel to Washington, D.C. for a week of interviews and presentations.


What skill it actually rewards: Not just having done good research — being able to distinguish your own contribution from your mentor's, in writing, under scrutiny. The application explicitly requires students to separate what they did from what any lab or mentor helped with. This is a test of ownership as much as ability.


2. ISEF (Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair)


What you submit: A completed research project displayed on a physical board at the fair, backed by a written project summary and abstract, defended live in a face-to-face interview with a panel of judges.


What areas it covers: 22 categories spanning biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science, environmental science, mathematics, and more — the widest subject range of any competition on this list.


What skill it actually rewards: Real-time defense. Unlike Regeneron STS, where the writing itself carries most of the weight, ISEF judging happens through direct, spontaneous questioning. A student can't rely on a well-polished paper alone — they have to know their project well enough to handle questions they didn't anticipate. Getting to ISEF at all requires winning through an affiliated regional or state fair first, so a Finalist has already cleared one real competitive round before the international event even starts.


3. JSHS (Junior Science & Humanities Symposium)


What you submit: A written research paper, followed by a live oral presentation and Q&A in front of a judging panel, at both regional and national levels.


What areas it covers: Any scientific or engineering discipline — despite "Humanities" in the name, this is a hard-science research symposium, federally sponsored by the Department of Defense and the service branches.


What skill it actually rewards: Oral communication under time pressure, specifically. JSHS puts more weight on the live presentation than most research fairs — a strong paper that's delivered poorly can lose ground here in a way it wouldn't at a poster-based fair.


4. Conrad Challenge


What you submit: A multi-stage progression: a Lean Canvas mapping your idea and market, then an Innovation Brief answering ten structured questions about your innovation's story, impact, and business model, a 3–5 minute Innovation Video, and — for finalists — a live pitch and judges' Q&A at the in-person Innovation Summit.


What areas it covers: Five categories: Aerospace and Aviation, Cyber Technology and Security, Energy and Environment, Health and Nutrition, and Water. Teams of 2–5 students work with an adult coach over several months.


What skill it actually rewards: Taking a technical idea all the way to a business model, not just a working concept. Conrad explicitly wants teams to explain their market, their revenue model, and their real-world feasibility — a strong prototype with no business thinking behind it will underperform here.


5. Diamond Challenge


What you submit: A written venture concept and a short video pitch, advancing (for top teams) to a live pitch at a regional or the international Diamond Challenge Summit.


What areas it covers: Two tracks — Business Innovation (a for-profit venture) or Social Innovation (a venture solving a social or environmental problem) — with no restriction on industry within either track.


What skill it actually rewards: Original venture design from a blank page, in a genuine team setting (2–4 students plus an adult advisor). Unlike the research competitions on this list, there's no existing experiment or dataset to build from — the entire concept has to be invented, validated, and pitched successfully.


6. Blue Ocean Student Entrepreneur Competition


What you submit: A 3–5 minute video pitch, solo or in a team of up to 5, built using a specific strategic framework rather than a free-form business idea.


What areas it covers: Open industry, but every submission has to apply the "Blue Ocean Strategy" methodology specifically — using tools like the Strategy Canvas, the Buyer Utility Map, and the Eliminate-Reduce-Raise-Create Grid to identify an uncontested market space rather than competing head-on in an existing one.


What skill it actually rewards: Applying a specific, structured business framework correctly — this one is taught at over 2,800 universities, so judges are evaluating whether a student actually understood and applied the methodology, not just whether they have a good idea. It's the most academically structured of the entrepreneurship competitions on this list. It's also, by scale, the largest: over 12,700 students from 163 countries competed in 2025.


7. Technovation Girls


What you submit: A working mobile app prototype, a business pitch, and a demo video, built by an all-girls team addressing a real problem in their community. For high schoolers, a business plan is required in the submission.


What areas it covers: Open problem area, but the solution must be a functioning mobile app — this is the only competition on this list that requires actual software you can run, not just a design or a plan.


What skill it actually rewards: The combination of technical build and business pitch in one team, specifically among girls in a field where that combination is still underrepresented. A team can have a great app and a weak pitch, or vice versa, and both halves are genuinely judged. Finalists are judged live via Q&A with a panel of industry experts, so your knowledge and experience matter.


8. Genius Olympiad


What you submit: Varies significantly by category — a formal research paper with data and figures for the Science track, but a short film, a musical composition, a piece of visual art, or a speech for the other eight disciplines (Robotics, Entrepreneurship, Speech, Coding, Artificial Intelligence, Art, Short Film, and Music).


What areas it covers: Every submission, regardless of discipline, must address an environmental or sustainability issue — this is the one unifying requirement across all nine categories.


What skill it actually rewards: Genuinely different skills depending on category, which is what makes Genius Olympiad unusual — it's as much a creative-writing or filmmaking competition as a science fair, unified only by subject matter. Science-category winners are invited to submit their research for peer review and publication in the International Journal of High School Research, one of the few competitions on this list with a direct, built-in path to a real publication.


9. National STEM Festival


What you submit: An individual project (no teams) using the scientific method or engineering design process, tied to one of six annual themes — for 2026, these were Aerospace Innovation, Future Food, Environmental Stewardship, Health & Medicine, Power the Planet, and Tech for Good — submitted as a written summary and project video.


What areas it covers: Whatever fits within that year's six themes, which rotate — a deliberately broad net meant to make the competition accessible regardless of a student's specific interest.


What skill it actually rewards: Applying a formal research or design process to a self-chosen real-world problem, evaluated regionally (56 regions nationwide) before a small number of National Champions are selected to present in Washington, D.C. Because it's run in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education and structured around broad annual themes, it's more accessible as an entry point than some of the narrower, more specialized competitions on this list.


10. Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (formerly Broadcom MASTERS)


What you submit: First, a project at an affiliated regional or state science fair — only the top 10% of students from those fairs are even eligible to apply. From there, an online application including a project summary and essays about STEM interests and community engagement narrows a pool down to a Top 300, then 30 national finalists. This is the equivalent of ISEF for middle school students.


What areas it covers: Any STEM research area, since qualification runs through general-purpose regional science fairs rather than a themed application.


What skill it actually rewards: Two different things at two different stages. Qualifying at all requires strong independent research. But finalists face something none of the other competitions on this list do: in-person, hands-on team STEM challenges in Washington, D.C., solved on the spot alongside other finalists they've just met — a real test of collaboration and adaptability that has nothing to do with the research project that got them there. Worth knowing if you've heard the older name: this competition ran as Broadcom MASTERS from 2010 through 2022, then was rebranded under a new sponsor in 2023 — same competition, same qualifying pathway, new name.


The real differences worth knowing


  • Written report vs. live defense. Regeneron STS is won largely on the strength of the paper itself; ISEF and JSHS both add a live, unscripted defense on top of the work.


  • Individual vs. team. Regeneron STS, ISEF, JSHS, Genius Olympiad, and National STEM Festival are individual efforts. Conrad Challenge, Diamond Challenge, Blue Ocean (optionally), Technovation Girls, and the Thermo Fisher JIC's finalist stage all involve working with others — a genuinely different experience and skill set.


  • Research vs. venture. Half this list rewards rigorous, original research. The other half rewards inventing and pitching something that doesn't exist yet — a different kind of creativity, closer to founding a company than answering a scientific question.


  • Path to publication. Of everything on this list, Genius Olympiad is the only one with a direct, built-in path from winning to peer-reviewed publication in an undergraduate venue. That said, many of our students have published the work that led to wins in the other competitions. Some also choose to forgo this competition provided path in favor of other publication paths. The publication can be independent. In some cases (like Regeneron STS and ISEF), the publication itself can be a factor in a winning competition submission.


How to actually start


Most of these wins didn't start as "let's enter a competition." They started as a real project or idea — often with a research paper behind it, even for the entrepreneurship-track competitions — and the competition placement came after the work was already good. Students who start by picking a competition and reverse-engineering a project tend to produce something thinner than students who start with a genuine question and let the competition follow. That said, keeping the competitions in mind is helpful.


If your student has an idea, a research interest or simply a desire to explore a topic in depth and have impact, that's usually the actual starting point.
