Top Venues For Publishing High School Research

Top publication venues for high school research

Are you interested in publishing research as a high schooler but dont know how to go about it? This blog outlines the elements to consider, and some well-respected targets.

What to look for in publishing research as a high schooler?

The first thing to note is that you have the option of publishing in a professional journal or a high school journal. Professional journals are more prestigious and much harder to get into. At AIClub Research Institute, our mentors recommend either a professional or high school venue, depending on your research project and target timelines.  Our students have had significant success across the board. 80% of students who targeted publications with us have had their work successfully published at prestigious venues. 77% of our student publications have been in professional research venues.

Next, you should consider the selectivity of the journal, its prestige, and whether your topic is suitable for the journal. It would be best to consider whether the journal is “pay to play”. We discourage these. You should always target a peer-reviewed journal, where acceptance sends a signal regarding the quality of the work as assessed by knowledgeable reviewers. Remember that where you publish matters as much as whether you publish.

While professional conferences are extremely topic-specific, high school venues target a range of topics that high school students can explore. Below are well-regarded professional and high school venues:

Top professional venues for high school research

  1. NeurIPS Workshops: NeurIPS, or Neural Information Processing Systems, is one of the leading Machine Learning conferences in the world. NeurIPS Workshops are highly selective venues targeting specialized applied research.

  2. AAAI Workshops: Similarly, AAAI is also one of the world’s leading Machine Learning Conferences, with similarly selective applied research workshops,

  3. IEEE Conferences and Workshops: IEEE conferences and workshops target a range of applied and fundamental research, and are well regarded due to the IEEE brand and standards for review, as well as the inclusion of accepted papers in IEEE Explore.

  4. ACM Conferences and Workshops: Similarly, the Association of Computing Machinery, an extremely well-respected international academic organization, runs conferences and workshops on targeted deep research topics. Admission is selective with a stringent review process, and publication of accepted papers in the ACM Digital Library.

  5. SPIE Conferences and Workshops: The International Society of Photonics and Optics runs a series of conferences and workshops, some of which explore machine learning or data science in the service of optical data and applications.

The conference groups above are roughly ranked in prestige, with IEEE and ACM ranking about equal.

Top high school venues for high school research

  1. Journal of Emerging Investigators: JEI is particularly well known for its extensive review process. STEM research, including AI applications in STEM, are well received here.

  2. Journal of Student Research: This is a multidisciplinary, and faculty-reviewed journal that publishes research by high school, undergraduate, and graduate students

  3. Johns Hopkins Pre-Collegiate Global Health Review: This journal, published by Johns Hopkins, features articles by high school students on topics related to public health. Articles are generally not required to be as deeply analytical or experimental as a research paper.

  4. Columbia Junior Science Journal: This journal provides high school students with a platform to publish manuscripts in the fields of natural sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and social sciences.

  5. Curieux Academic Journal: This journal publishes research in both the sciences and the humanities. It is expected to be easier to access than others on this list.

All of these venues are a great target for students looking to learn the review and publishing process and improve the quality of their work.

How does the AIClub Research Institute help High School students publish?

When you work with our research institute, you will be matched with one of our Ph.D mentors, all of whom have extensive research experience and publication records. They will advise you on a suitable target for your work, depending on many factors such as your target timeline, research topic, planned and executed experiments and analysis, and so on. Our instructors work with students to teach them any skills they may still be lacking, and to help them design and execute an experimental strategy. The mentor works with the student to provide project guidance and paper review during the stages leading up to submission. Our mentors also often help students to target a multi-level strategy, where they may try a more prestigious venue first and have a fallback in case they need it. We also advise on how publications and science fair submissions can be optimally coordinated.
